The squat movement is one of the most used movements in exercise and in our day to day life. You probably have heard of using the squat position to lift heavy objects safely, but we also squat every time we stand or sit from a chair.
Squatting is super healthy for our joints, muscles, and to be able to get about our day comfortably and with ease.
Here are a couple tips on how to squat properly, whether it be for exercise or for doing a task in everyday life.
Keep the feet flat on the ground. Don’t let the heels come up and try to not let your legs rotate outwards as you squat down. If they tend to want to rotate, you may want to start with slight rotation at the feet to begin.
Keep your knees over your feet. Don’t let the knees sag inwards as you squat.
Sit your hips back. Pretend that you are sitting in a chair behind you.
Keep your back neutral. Our spine as a natural curve that you want to maintain as you squat, don’t let it flatten out or arch further.
The next time you squat at the gym, or lift something heavy, remember these tips to dial in on your squatting form. Sometimes it even helps to practice in a mirror so that you can make corrections if needed.
